It was last February that Regan Schenck’s last-gasp three-pointer broke Eastlake’s heart in the Kingco playoffs.

The two teams squared off again last Wednesday night in Sammamish. It was billed as a battle of the unbeatens. A confrontation for Kingco supremacy. But the torrid shooting of Eastlake’s Cameron Edward and the tepid play from the girls in green paved the way for Eastlake’s 57-42 win over Woodinville.  

“It wasn’t our day today,” Woodinville coach Scott Bullock said. “We had a lot of players we count on to score that didn’t score today.”

With the win, the Lady Wolves improved to 4-0 in Kingco 4A, and 6-0 overall. Woodinville fell to 3-1 in league and 4-1 overall.

Eastlake started the game on a 5-0 run before Woodinville got things going. Three-point baskets from Maddy Dubois and Regan Schenck lifted the Falcons to a 7-5 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Woodinville’s Mia Hughes knocked down a baseline jumper to stake the Falcons to a 15-13 lead. Falcon forward Morgan Lundquist soon hit a jumper of her own, as Woodinville trailed 23-22 at the half.

The second half was a different story—i.e all Eastlake. The Lady Wolves went on a 14-1 run to amass a 37-23 lead. From that point, the Falcons’ fate was sealed.

“They started hitting their threes, and the crowd was going crazy,” Woodinville’s Maddy Dubois said. “Everyone on our team was like deer in the headlights. But I think we can learn from that for sure. You can’t get rattled by that. Basketball is a game of runs. That’s what [assistant coach Sam Moscatel] always tells us. It’s a game of runs and we’ve got to just chip away.”

Eastlake’s Edward led all scorers with 19 points. Woodinville’s intriguing freshman Mia Hughes finished with 18 points while Dubois tallied 12.   

“I thought we did a good job of controlling their inside game, but the [three pointers] hurt us,” Bullock said. “And we couldn’t score and we had some frustration fouls. I think all the girls are anxious to get back in the gym and then get back out there for the next game.”

As of this writing, Woodinville has one game remaining against North Creek (Dec. 19) before taking a week off for Christmas. The Falcons will get another shot at Eastlake when they host the Lady Wolves January 19th.

“This was our first hard game this season,” Dubois said. “We came in with a lot of confidence. It’s good to have confidence, but it would be better if we came in with more [fortitude] like we normally do. I think that contributed to our loss.

“And we need to work harder in practice,” Dubois added. “In practice we haven’t been as focused as usual. Our team likes to goof around together. We work hard in practice but it’s clear after tonight that we need to take things to another level.”
